How to Choose Athletic Footwear

by Cover Ground on October 15, 2011

As an athlete, having the right footwear can prove essential in making sure that you are able to give the best possible performance within your chosen field. With this in mind, here are some top tips for choosing the best athletic shoes for you.

Firstly, it is essential that you try your shoes on before making your purchase. Even if you have always taken a certain size, there is always a chance that you might require a larger or smaller shoe in certain styles. If you’ve set your heart on a particular style of shoe but it is unavailable in your size, then don’t kid yourself that the material will stretch over time. If anything, your feet tend to swell with the heat during exercise, and shoes which are too tight will simply become tighter and more uncomfortable. It is always worth investing in a pair which are the perfect size for you.

When trying on your shoes, don’t forget to wear the socks which you would usually choose for athletic activities. These tend to be a little thicker than regular socks, and can make all the difference to the fit of your shoe. It is also a good idea to stand up, and test how your shoes feel when performing the movements which you tend to use for your chosen sport. After all, while a shoe may feel perfectly comfortable when taking a casual stroll to the shops or playing an online game of partypoker, it may rub or pinch when you are running or jumping. Always try on both shoes in a pair to ensure that they fit both of your feet.

Lastly, you should be prepared to invest in athletic footwear on a more regular basis than you might with most other types of shoe. If you are training regularly, then your footwear is likely to need replacing more often in order to ensure that you are always wearing shoes which are in good condition. If you take part in various types of athletics, you may even find that some styles of athletic footwear are better suited to some activities than others.
