Drills are often overlooked in the process of trying to become faster. Why, well they are boring, and it is very meticulous work. Drills provide you with so much, if and only if, you are doing them correctly of course. The main reason drills can be key in helping you run fast is they greatly improve your mechanics of running. Many times it is very hard to fix a problem you have when you are running as fast as you can. For example, say you are duck foot (meaning your feet point out when you walk or run), it is too hard to sprint your fastest while not running duck foot, but this can be focused on easier when doing drills. This includes marching A’s, Skipping A’s, running A’s, butt kicks as the basic drills to start with.
Advantages of Drills
- If you do these drills a good distance and jog back, it can be a tough thing to do and can then give you some cardio benefits
- Teaches you to keep excellent form even when tired
- Allows you to fix mechanical problems and get numerous reps in the correct way
- Drill form does translate over to sprinting form in time
- Teaches you to work on the little things because the little things become big things
