To Fear or Not to Fear?

Now, I’m not talking about the boogey man or having a gun in your face.  Fear is real, yet fear is so fake. How is this so, and how do you really know when it is real?  That is the issue at hand.

Fight or Flight, and sometimes we need to turn around and fight back.

Real Fear

Bottom line is that fear is a natural mechanism in all of us designed as a warning system to something we don’t want to happen. If someone puts a gun to your face, you are scared because a bullet in your head will not be a good thing for your your brain cells. (If you don’t know that please do not try it.)

But none the less, fear is something that every human knows is a part of us. Sometimes we allow this fear mechanism to be used rapidly when it should not be. We use it when we are in no immediate danger and we live every day in fear of something.

You Build It

Fear is a strong feeling and we tend to build it up in our own heads many times. We are scared of so many things that we can’t even name them. When you’re an athlete this is a problem because you need to be fearless.  Fearless of any competitor, fearless of coming back from injury, fearless of success and the list could clearly go on.

Why would you fear your competition, are you in any immediate danger? No, but yet we fear people. No person should ever be feared because of their athletic ability because you have already lost. You have built something that is not real in your head. Everybody is human, everybody can get hurt and everybody can lose so what is this fear you speak of?

Fear of Success

We fear being powerful beyond measure, how does that make any sense?

Do you think it is possible to be scared of being successful?

I would love to know what you think about fear as an athlete, leave a comment below.
